Of course, addictions come with a wide variety of costs and benefits. The willingness to obtain a mood change is where addiction is seeded. Each addiction, in and of itself, and in a moderated climate is seldom a horrendous behavior or substance. It isn't just online casino gambling that is accused. Many behaviors or substances face the blame. However, serious thinkers need ask, "where is the real problem"? What mood most influences destructive long-term choices? What emotion does the act of gambling mask for the addict: anger, fear, boredom, stress, frustration, sadness, shame, depression, anxiety, irritability, tension, hurt, grief, loneliness, apathy, resentment? On the other side, what positive feelings does it enhance? A sense of:  power, cleverness, self-control? The answer only matters to the addict. But it is important to identify in order to resolve. It is the seed of healing. Focusing on online casino gambling or any form of gambling is masking the real issue.

So let us take a moment to discuss the real issue which is: gambling is an emotional experience that one attempts to resolve with a 'logical choice' that offers a high (emotional) pay-off. The fact that it seldom, or never happens is irrelevant to the addict. Learning alternative methods of dealing with the mood disorder gets lost in the focus on the addiction over the source.

Dr. Rose Van Es, Director of International Compulsive Gambling Institute of Iona College argues that the 'institution' that offers opportunity for gambling is nothing more than a business capitalizing on what already exists.

Online casino gambling, or any gambling, does not create addicts. All people who gamble are not addicts. All addicts are not gamblers. Gambling, in and of itself is relatively harmless and, as noted above, practiced by most people daring to create an enhanced life. Risk-taking is not intrinsically addictive. It develops, as established above.
